TODAY’S OUTLINE: DAILY GUIDE 5TH JULY 2020
Yesterday, we saw David settling down to governance, determined to do what is just and right for all. In continuation, he sought out the son of his late friend, Jonathan, to show him God’s kindness (v.3; see v.7a for the reason for his action). What does this teach you about true friendship? (Proverbs 17:17; 18:24 KJV).
Mephibosheth benefited from the friendship investment made by his father. What legacy, good will, or investment are you leaving behind for your dependants, associates and neighbours? From v.7, notice three specific promises David made to Mephibosheth. Furthermore, David ordered the entire staff of king Saul to serve him and relocated him to Jerusalem (v. 13), close to the king where he was catered for and protected.
Mephibosheth did not labour for any of these favours. This is grace at work, similar to what God has done for those who belong to Jesus Christ. Unable to help ourselves, God shows us mercy (kindness), provides for us, protects us; for the sake of the investment Christ made through his suffering, death and resurrection. By and by, he will relocate us to his abode, the new Jerusalem. Notice the good example of Ziba: he was straight forward and obedient (vv.3–4,11), at least for now.
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Practice/Word Application
• So: Christ is our great friend for whose sake, God remembers, restores and will later relocate all who belong to him.
Peace
Peace does not just mean the absence of conflict or war but inner calmness. We receive peace when we are justified through faith in Christ and develop a close relationship with God. It comes as a gift from the Holy Spirit. Those who have experienced the peace of God have a special responsibility to live at peace with others.
Today’s Prayer:
• Lord Jesus, I surrender to you. Help me to live for you daily.
• Pray for Christian Ministries that either provide free Bibles or are involved in Bible translation into ethnic languages such as Gideon International, Bible Society of Nigeria, etc.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Numbers 22:12
Read the Bible in one Year: Deut. 28–29; Acts 7:1–21
